Every upcycler has that one story—the project that simply refused to cooperate, no matter how much planning or care went into it.
We'd forgotten we had this particular table and it would have stayed forgotten if we didn't decide to clear out our storage area. It was a good shape and size, had nice proportions and wasn't an antique. Tick! Tick! Tick! I imagined pale yellow paint, a top decoupaged with whimsical acorns care of some gorgeous paper napkins - a hint of English country house charm that would make anyone smile.
And The Winner Is...
Upcycling isn’t always as easy as the glossy results seen in magazines.
Sometimes, a bold idea turns into a what was I thinking moment. The acorns didn't look whimsical. In some places, the napkins butted up against each other creating angry, crooked lines or were too far apart. After hours of painting, gluing and sanding I ended up with something resembling a big bowl of custard on legs, no less.
The coffee table and I were having an identity crisis. It was time for a glass of wine and a rethink...
Embracing The Learning Curve
The beauty of working with vintage and pre-loved furniture is that every project tells its own story—sometimes hilarious, sometimes humbling. This table may not have become the showstopper I pictured, but it offered new inspiration for what comes next. I now know how not to create a bowl of custard on legs.
Upcycling offers a way to add personality and warmth to any home, but it’s never just about the outcome. Every win, wobble, and mishap brings its own lessons and a chance to try again. The table and I are having a rest, ready for our next chapter, and I’m looking forward to bringing it out again with a fresh perspective.
Every project has bumps along the way. Give yourself the freedom to make mistakes, step back, and return when the time feels right. Sometimes, a piece just needs another chance (and perhaps a less sunny shade of paint).
